And now as an uber-feminist myself, I can't imagine outright banning Barbie, either. Reading this actually helped me solidify my thoughts on Barbie - I think she's a poor role model when it comes to consumerism, but I'm not terribly worried about warped body image issues. Supermarket tabloids, TV and movies worry me much more!

Doret - No, there's no mention of the big break up! Ken is practically ignored in the book - which, from my experience, is what happened to him in most toy boxes. Like Madigan, I had one Ken doll, but mostly my Barbies all lived together in one matriarchal enclave.

As for her sister being her daughter, well, you never know! If Barbie's 50, her parents must be pretty old to have little kids running around...Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13223450892316241062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8136422718652647102.post-44659571584055811522010-10-04T22:01:42.751-04:002010-10-04T22:01:42.751-04:00One of my co-worker's believes Barbie's &q...One of my co-worker's believes Barbie's "sister" is actually her daughter. Since the parents are never around Barbie is always looking after her.

Does Stone mention Barbie and Ken's break up. I didn't own any Barbie's dolls. I had a cabbage patch doll though.Dorethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08676911030014718403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8136422718652647102.post-55799895581039822832010-10-04T18:00:43.801-04:002010-10-04T18:00:43.801-04:00Barbie!!! My feminist parents banned Barbie from ...Barbie!!! My feminist parents banned Barbie from our house. Sadly, I think having Barbie as a forbidden fruit only made her all the more appealing to me!

As a pre-teenager, my parents finally relented (couldn't continue to resist, I guess) and allowed me and my sisters Barbies. We took very good care of them. We had a few ladies, one brunette Barbie that I remember, a Barbie with a blonde 'fro, and some standard long-haired blonde dolls. We had one lone Ken doll, whose leg promptly fell off. The Barbies would occasionally go on a "pity-date" with gimpy Ken, but they preferred to rock out on their own, going to fashion shows or painting the town red. Having missed out on Barbie in my younger years, I made up for lost time by continuing to play with Barbies right through high school.
